It’s been expected that Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) will be bringing out the big guns when its much-anticipated streaming service debuts in 2019, and we now have confirmation on what one of those guns will be. Fans of that galaxy far, far away will certainly be inspired to add another streaming option their personal viewing lineups.
Star Wars has the details on a new live-action series coming to a streaming service near you in 2019.
Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series for Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform. Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars galaxy having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is excited to see what Favreau has up his sleeve, as she notes the collaboration will afford the studio “the opportunity to build a robust talent base.” As For Favreau, the lifelong Star Wars fan sounds legitimately pumped to be able to put his spin on the iconic franchise, noting that he “can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”
No release date has been announced for the upcoming series, but you can sure that will become clear by the time Disney is ready to debut its new streaming service.
Walt Disney Co shares were trading at $104.41 per share on Thursday afternoon, up $0.82 (+0.79%). Year-to-date, DIS has declined -2.88%, versus a 2.67% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.
