$CRTX Looking into IL-8 this weekend for reasons unrelated to AD and came across a paper that describes a few polymorphisms that increase susceptibility to periodontitis: -251 (T/A), -396 (T/G) and +781 (C/T) (Benakanakere et al, 2016). I went to see if any of these also increased susceptibility to AD and found that the -251 variant has been (“Interleukin-8 gene polymorphism -251 T/A contributes to Alzheimer’s disease susceptibility”, Qin et al 2016). The literature indicates that it’s probable the increased IL-8 levels in the AA genotype would play a role in both diseases independently, but also possible that this is yet another link between the two and the increased probability of PD and subsequent brain infection is casual to the increased susceptibility to AD as well.
