$MS Consumer sentiment index fell 13.5% from July [to August], To a level just below the April 2020 low of 71.8. Over the last half century, the sentiment index has only recorded significant losses in six other surveys, all related to sudden negative changes in the economy. The only major decline in the sentiment index occurred during the recession in April 2020 (-19.4%). And at the depth of the Great Recession in October 2008 (-18.1%). Losses in early August spread across income, age and education subgroups and were observed in all regions.
