How Q3 Earnings Growth Will Impact the Stock Market

This is now the 3rd week of the market’s melt-up. It’s unusual for the S&P 500 (SPY) to go up so long without a pullback. But, it’s the most logical outcome given the combination of year-end strength, fund manager inflows, and a strong earnings season. Yes, this earnings season has been strong on an overall basis despite some high-profile misses and some cautious commentary on conference calls. In today’s commentary, I want to review earnings season in more detail and discuss some interesting, potential opportunities in the market. Read on below to find out more…

What Q3 GDP Means for the Stock Market

One of the major headlines today was Q3 GDP coming in at 2% which increases concerns that the economy is decelerating in a high-inflation environment with a hawkish Fed. Normally, this combination would be enough to send stocks lower. However, I’m seeing multiple silver linings in the GDP report that are making me more optimistic about the growth outlook. But as we’ve discussed, these bearish headwinds are being overwhelmed by an outstanding earnings season. Earnings growth for the S&P 500 (SPY) is now expected to be 34.7%, a significant increase from 24% a couple of months ago. Thus, the S&P 500 made new highs earlier this week and is hovering near those levels. In today’s commentary, I want to cover the GDP report more in depth and connect it to trends that are emerging on conference calls during earnings seasons. Read on below to find out more…

How De-bottlenecking Will Provide a Further Boost to the Stock Market

Last week's melt-up in stocks has continued. Now, "melt-up" isn't typically thought of as a scientific term and it's kind of a ridiculous name, to be honest, but I'm attempting to make it something more technical and definable. My definition is that it's a period of time when stock prices rise with every subsequent close being above the previous day's low. This means the S&P 500 (SPY) has been "melting up" for 9 trading sessions for a more than 5% gain. Equally important, it's corresponded to a risk-on period with an abundance of stocks making new highs and outperformance in small/mid/growth stocks which have benefitted our portfolio. In today's commentary, I will connect the melt-up theme to previous musings on why Q4 will be bullish including fund manager positioning. Then I will provide an update on the three broad categories of stocks - growth, value, and reflation - and why I'm now adding a 4th category. Read on below to find out more…

3 Key Themes That Could Drive the Stock Market to New Heights

In today’s trading session, the S&P 500 (SPY briefly made new, all-time highs before slightly backing off. Currently, we are about 10 points below these highs. In the short-term, it seems that any dips are likely to be shallow and buying opportunities. This is due to a continued strong earnings season, fund manager positioning, and seasonality. One potential concern is that inflation has remained stubbornly elevated and begun to materially impact some companies’ results. Overall, there’s been little impact in terms of EPS growth and margins, however if the situation continues to get worse, it’s only a matter of time before it starts to negatively affect results and outlooks on an economy-wide scale. In today’s commentary, I want to cover earnings season and discuss this potential threat. Then, I will discuss some themes I find intriguing into year-end. Read on below to find out more…
