How Will Evergrande’s Insolvency Affect the Stock Market?

Every correction starts as a dip. But not every dip turns into a correction. This is worth noting with the S&P 500 (SPY) off by 4% from its highs, and the Vix up by more than 30% at today’s lows. More importantly, how do we know if the dip should be bought or if it going to morph into something worse? This will be the major focus of today’s commentary. I will also provide updates on the coronavirus situation and how it could impact our portfolio. Read on below to find out more…

How the Delta Variant Peak Will Impact the Stock Market

Last week, I discussed why the typical classification system of dividing stocks into growth and value buckets was not sufficient for the current S&P 500 (SPY) environment. Instead, a more accurate system would be dividing stocks into 3 categories –growth, value, and reflation. The tricky part is that right now, reflation stocks have the most earnings growth. And, they have the cheapest valuations. This is certainly a unique development which is fitting given that we are living through a very unique period of time. In this week’s commentary, I want to discuss the changing fortunes of these various groups, when the market environment will get friendlier for small and mid caps stocks and some glimmers of optimism in the coronavirus situation. How Reflation Stocks Outperform the Stock Market

Typically, stocks are divided into two broad categories – growth and value. For the current S&P 500 (SPY) environment, I don’t think that is sufficient. Instead, I believe a better way is to classify stocks into three categories – growth, value, and reflation. Reflation stocks outperform when optimism about economic growth and the economy returning to normal increase. Think of energy, materials, and travel stocks. Value stocks are comprised of industries like utilities, defense, and consumer staples that deliver steady returns and perform best when interest rates and growth expectations decline. They are the best bet in an environment of low-growth and low rates. In recent months, growth stocks have underperformed after leading in 2020. For the sake of clarity, I define them as stocks with exposure to industries that are expected to rapidly expand in the coming years (independent of the broader economy) and tend to have high multiples and are riskier in the event of a market sell-off or poor earnings results. In this week’s commentary, I want to discuss why the environment is improving for this group and the reflation stocks, plus how we will take advantage. Read on below to find out more…

Does the Underlying Narrative Match the Reality of the Market?

As humans, we yearn for simple narratives - cause and effect.; good or bad; bullish or bearish. However, reality rarely cooperates. Deep down, we know this to be true. We live in a dynamic world with infinite variables that can never be totally understood. From a market (SPY) perspective, think of all the widely accepted "truths" that have proven to be false over the last decade - the law of large numbers that says that corporations become inefficient and poor investments past a certain size, the connection between interest rates, inflation, and economic growth, or the impact of deficits and loose monetary policy on the economy. I believe that to succeed in life and markets, we need to cultivate flexible thinking and "loosely held convictions". In this week's commentary, I want to apply these principles to the current market environment and discuss why it's particularly germane. Read on below to find out more…
